A great ca. 1865 CDV showing Private George W. Warner (1832-1923) of Bethany, CT who enlisted in Co. B, 20th Connecticut on August 5, 1862. After surviving a baptism of fire at Chancellorsville in May 1863, Warner became the victim of friendly fire at the battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863.

On that day, Warner's regiment, which was commanded by Col. Wooster, was ordered to advance against the Confederate position arrayed on the east side of Culp's Hill. During their advance, the 20th came under friendly artillery fire. Col. Wooster sent word (mostly likely through Sgt. Maj. Horace Tarr whose Gettysburg letter we have for sale) to the errant Northern battery commander to cease firing. His shells burst among the astonished Union infantrymen. The battery commander refused citing that he could not take orders from a mere colonel. Soon after, another shell fell into the ranks of the 20th and exploded wounding several including Private Warner. Enraged, Col. Wooster wheeled his regiment around (with their backs were now to the enemy) and sent word to the battery commander that if he did not stop firing he, Wooster, was going to charge the Northern battery instead. After much confusion the battery commander redirected his fire and Wooster's men were able to continue their advance. After much hard fighting they were able to help win the day for the Union forces on that part of Meade's lines at Gettysburg.

Afterwards, Warner returned home and fathered a large family that he helped maintain through the sale of images of himself such as the one we offer here. He is buried at Evergreen Cemetery, New Haven, CT. This image is by Henry S. Peck, New Haven. Overall near fine.
