This is the upper nose section only of a 3-inch Hotchkiss case-shot shell. It meas. approx. 2.25 inches across and has the fuse hole at center. Still present in the fuse hole is the adapter for a paper time fuse. Item is rusted but in good condition otherwise.
This fragment is from the collection of the Lee’s Headquarters Museum of Gettysburg artifacts and was released by them in the late 1990’s when the museum was redesigned. It was sold at that time and has now come up for sale again.
