This Pattern 1826 eagle breast plate was meant for wear on the sling of a Union soldier’s cartridge box. The face of this plate is discolored from ground action but most of the detail of the eagle can be seen. The only drawback is a “blob” of rust that sits on the eagle’s chest. The edges of the plate are good and there are no freeze cracks visible.
The reverse has 90% of the lead fill with one rusted hook.
Item was recovered on private property near Culp’s Hill at Gettysburg.
