Made by Edward Woodward. Mounted on a flat wooden plaque measuring 7 x 4 x .875”, with small dark front sticker label: “Gettysburg / July 1863.” The set contains a small, flower decorated inkwell, 1.25 x 1”, with “crystal” stopper-lid. Flanked by a canister ball, two fired .69 caliber round-shot, two .58 caliber Minie balls [one with an extraction hole], a US coat button, and a post-war Texas “star” button, pinned to the wood with a nail. Also the stump of a US bayonet shank with locking ring. With one vacant hole which appears to have been occupied by a pistol ball.
All pieces are in good condition, beginning with the inkwell. Canister ball, bayonet shank and buttons exhibit rusty and pitting, and/or light tarnish. Wooden plaque displays minor nicks. Else VG.
During the Civil War, Woodward was a Baltimore-based gunsmith who, after visiting the Gettysburg battlefield, decided to move there and set up shop. Along with gunsmithing, Woodward began producing relic desk sets such as this one, from 1885 through the turn of the century. A highly attractive & desirable old time Gettysburg relic.
