This single-shot, percussion shortarm used during the Civil War is an original Sharps New Model 1863 carbine that once was part of the Lee’s Headquarters Museum collection of Civil War artifacts in Gettysburg, PA. In .52 caliber, the breech loading specimen was invented and patented by Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps.

In fine original condition, this carbine bears serial # C14515 and has a 21½” long round barrel with a ‘straight-breech’ receiver and lockplate. Two-piece dark black walnut stock and forend are in good condition and appear just lightly cleaned. Right side of stock has large 1 1/8” high, hand carved letters “J.B”. No patchbox. Stock retains two, strong, government inspector cartouches visible under the sling bar. One frame screw shows buggering, rest fine. All metal surfaces of the carbine have been cleaned. Frame and lockplate have scattered spots of dark oxidation overall. Barrel exhibits moderate areas of black oxidation and pin prick pitting. No trace of original colors present. Receiver maker markings and patent designations are clear and readable. Barrel stampings strong. Serial # C, 14515 on tang is sharp. Iron sling ring and bar are tight. Mechanics good. Some major components have sub-inspector’s marks visible. Bore with its six-groove rifling is dusty with areas of light to moderate pitting. Could use a cleaning.
