Image appears to date from the 1880’s to the early 1900’s. The view was taken on the Gettysburg battlefield looking south from the southern end of the “Valley of Death.”
In the foreground of the picture can be seen Plum Run with Devil’s Den in the right background and “The Slaughter Pen” at the foot of Big Round Top filling the center and left background. The subject of the photo is a lone tree growing among the boulders.
The image size is approx. 6.00 x 8.00 inches in size and has very good clarity and contrast. The image is mounted on heavy gray stock that meas. approx. 10.00 x 12.00 inches. The mount surfaces are clean with only one or two small spots of discoloration.
The reverse of the image has an old ink inscription at upper left that reads “GETTYSBURGH / ‘THE SLAUGHTER PEN’ / LOOKING DOWN ‘THE VALLEY OF DEATH.’ / PLATINUM PRINT”.
