This shell and sabot are in excellent condition.
The body of the shell is very smooth and clean. It exhibits only light surface pitting. Fuse hole is slight rusted but has good threads. The lathe dog is still present on the side of the nose.
Bottom has copper ring sabot that shows light signs of firing. Lathe dimple is present at bottom.
This shell was recovered at Gettysburg by the late Ron Miller who was a Gettysburg resident, a teacher and relic hunter. Ron and his brother Ed hunted the Gettysburg area for years starting in the 1960’s. A slip of paper stuffed in the nose of the shell tells a little about Mr. Miller and says that “collecting Civil War artifacts was his passion.” The slip of paper is from the auction house that handled the sale of Mr. Miller’s collection.
