Fired by Latham’s Battery from a position on South Confederate Avenue, which supported Longstreet’s attack on the Union flank on July 2nd. This battery was in Longstreet’s Corps, Hood’s Division, Henry’s Battalion. Latham’s Battery consisted of three Napoleons, one 12 pounder Howitzer, and one 6 pounder bronze gun. This was the only 6 pounder at Gettysburg! It was disabled by Smith’s New York battery in an artillery duel on the late afternoon of July 2nd.
This projectile was found shortly after the battle by a local family who lived between Gettysburg and Biglerville. It was passed down through the family until The Horse Soldier purchased this relic in January 2016! Nice untouched patina with very light ground action.
This projectile was a very common round prior to the American Civil War and was used heavily in the South. During the Battle of Gettysburg approximately 60 rounds were fired until the gun was disabled, making this round the rarest fired at Gettysburg.
