Item Code: 450-83

Made by Edward Woodward. This piece consists of an iron base cup of a 3” Hotchkiss artillery shell mounted on a flat wooden base measuring 4 x 4 x 7/8”. The base cup is an early battlefield pick-up that has “Gettysburg” engraved in script. Perhaps used as an ashtray in the past. Iron is in good condition with no flaking. Wood stand shows normal wear.

During the Civil War, Woodward was a Baltimore-based gunsmith who, after visiting the Gettysburg battlefield, decided to move there and set up shop. Along with gunsmithing, Woodward began producing relic desk sets such as this one, from 1885 through the turn of the century. A highly attractive & desirable old time Gettysburg relic.
