Display case of battlefield relics picked up by a visiting Civil War veteran.  Colonel James Mansfield of the 16^th Mass. Infantry picked up these things on Little Round Top. During the 1863 battle, he was a captain in the 11^th Mass. Infantry.  Items come with old penned note on a scrap of 1933 dated paper (typewritten on a business letterhead on the reverse), and a modern typewritten note indicating the items came from Mansfield’s estate. Relics include nine bullets and two iron artillery shell fragments.  The highlight of the items is the Confederate Read fragment which still retains the lead side-loading plug.  That piece measures 3.5” x 2”.

Mansfield was a 25 year grocer residing in South Reading MA when he enlisted on 7/12/61 as a Sgt. On that date he mustered into Co. E, 16^th Massachusetts. Promoted to 1^st Sgt.  Wounded at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. Re-enlisted on 12/23/63; promoted to 1^st Lt. on 2/14/64.  7/11/64 transferred to Co. E, 11^th Massachusetts. Promoted to Captain on 10/1964; Major, 6/16/65, Lt. Col. 7/11/65. Mustered out on 7/14/65 at Camp Meigs, Readville, MA. Died on January 1, 1923.
