This image was taken from the observation deck of a tower that once stood on East Cemetery Hill. The view is looking southwest and takes in the Baltimore Pike in the foreground with the gate of the Gettysburg National Cemetery along the road. The background is filled by the Soldier’s National Monument and the grave markers of the cemetery proper. To the left is a large flagpole with US flag. Also visible just inside the cemetery gate is a statue of Major General John F. Reynolds. Visible at lower left is the Tipton copyright and the date 1882.
Image is in good condition with good contrast and clarity. The actual image size is 9.25 x 5.50 inches and is mounted on a card with beveled edges tipped in gold. The card meas. approx. 12.00 x 6.00 inches. The left edge of the mount has “NATIONAL CEMETERY” in faint gold paint or ink while the right edge has a faint “GETTYSBURG.” Left border of the mount has some peeling above the wording.
The reverse of the card has a large label in good condition despite some peeling on the card surface. The label has the Tipton logo at top center with the title and number of the image “SOLDIER’S NATIONAL CEMETERY NO. 743.” Following the title is a long description of the image.
