Hatchet has some light surface rust but is firmly attached to the wooden handle. Fork has a dry split wooden handle with pewter double tines. Hatchet measures 13”long. Fork measure 7 ¼” long.

These items were originally displayed in the Lee’s Headquarters Museum which stood for years along Route 30 just west of Gettysburg and was well known for its collection of battlefield related artifacts.

Fork and hatchet are marked “340”. This number corresponds to an entry in the Lee’s Headquarters log book that reads “HATCHET & FORK CARRIED THROUGH ENTIRE CIVIL WAR BY ABEL PORTER OF GRAMESVILLE, N. Y., CO. G, 59TH N.Y.”

Also with the items are two museum signs relating the information listed above. One sign is hand printed on paper and the other is a hard plastic sign.

Research has shown that Able Porter enlisted in Company G, 56th New York and NOT 59th New York, on September 5, 1861. He served until mustered out on October 15, 1864. The regiment served on the Peninsula at Bottoms Bridge and Fair Oaks before being moved to the Department of the South and seeing action at Honey Hill, Deveaux’s Neck and several other smaller skirmishes.
