Half of a fired Confederate Smooth Read shell measuring about 5 ½” at its longest point. Nose has been completely blown off; all that remains is the base half of the shell. Sabot is bent but intact. Shell fragment shows heavy surface rust and pitting. This relic was found on the Gettysburg battlefield on the Wheatfield, south of the Loop.  [jt]
