Clear, crisp, sharp image of Jon Burns wearing a dark civilian suit with white shirt and black bowtie. On his head is his high crowned hat. Burns is posed leaning against a balustrade and cradling his famous musket in his left arm while his right arm rests on his hip with his hand hooked into his pocket.
Image contrast is excellent. Surface is clean.
Reverse has strong bold signature in period ink that reads “JOHN L. BURNS / GETTYSBURG.” Below this is the photographer’s mark of R. A. LEWIS… NEW YORK. In period pencil at bottom is “BO’T OF BURNS, WHO FOUGHT THRU’ THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG + WAS WOUNDED, + ALSO NEAR THE FIELD OF GENL. REYNOLDS. 9 MAY 1865.”
Reverse also has some light collectors notations in pencil.
The story of John Burns and his part as the only Gettysburg civilian to take part in the battle is well-known.
This is one of the nicest and cleanest signed Burn’s images we have seen. A first class quality item. [AD]
