This original Confederate six pound spherical shot was once part of the local Skelly Post Collection, housed in the GAR building on Middle Street in Gettysburg. In the late 1980’s a number of artillery projectiles were deaccessioned by the Post and consigned to The Horse Soldier to raise money to repair the building’s roof; this projectile was one of those.
Only one six pound gun was present during the Battle of Gettysburg, which was Branch’s North Carolina Battery commanded by Captain Latham. This gun went into action on July 2nd, firing first towards the Peach Orchard along the Emmitsburg Road, and then towards Smith’s New York Battery on top of Devil’s Den. After approx. 65 rounds were fired, the gun was disabled and remained out of action for the rest of the campaign.
An early battlefield find, very little surface action. A nice clean example. One of the most common projectiles used in the Civil War, but at Gettysburg it's the rarest one! [ws]
