This is an excavated cartridge box tin. It is the Confederate style, single wide tin. The Federal style employed two smaller side-by-side tins. This is in relic condition. It has been slightly flattened and there are missing portions of the various dividers. The tin is rusted with some pitting on the back (the piece must have been in the ground face down), but there is no flaking and the metal is solid and strong. The relic measures approximately 6 ¾” wide x 5” high x 1 1/8” deep. Although somewhat deformed, the compartments seem small and this may possibly be a tin for a .54 caliber cartridge box. Recovered from an unknown location at Gettysburg. [jet]
