Image shows Burns wearing a dark civilian suit with white shirt and black bowtie. On his head is his signature high crowned hat. He is posed leaning against a balustrade and cradling his musket in his left arm while his right arm rests on his hip with his hand hooked into his pocket.
Image is crisp and clean. Contrast is excellent.
Reverse has strong bold signature in period ink that reads “JOHN L. BURNS / GETTYSBURG.” Below this is the photographer’s mark of R. A. LEWIS… NEW YORK. In period pencil at bottom is “BOUGHT OF THE HERO OF GETTYSBURG AT THE METROPOLITAIN FAIR, N.Y. APRIL 12, 1864.”
The story of John Burns and his part as the only Gettysburg civilian to take part in the battle is well-known.
First class museum quality image. [AD]
