One of the more often seen poses of John Burns. The old fellow is standing by a balustrade with his rifle in the crook of his left arm. His right arm is by his side. Burns is shown wearing his usual dark civilian suit and high crown hat.
Image is clear and clean with good contrast.
Bottom of mount has bold period ink signature “JOHN L. BURNS.”
Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for E. & H. T. ANTHONY…NEW YORK FROM A BRADY NEGATIVE. In modern pencil at top is “FAMOUS PATRIOT.”
Burns became famous for being the only Gettysburg civilian to take part in the battle. He was also wounded during the fighting on July 1st. [AD]
