Regulation tan paper cartridge for the .58 caliber rifled musket. This specimen comes from the Lee’s Headquarters Museum and was reportedly picked up in the Wheatfield here at Gettysburg.
This is the typical "minie ball" cartridge of the American Civil War. Known as the "regulation" or "American military" style of cartridge, i.e., powder charge and bullet wrapped completely in paper, tied over the nose of the bullet, with the powder end being closed with folds which formed a tail. The paper around the bullet end of the cartridge is dirty but otherwise a very solid cartridge. Paper is in very good condition. An accompanying x-ray shows the bullet profile. [jet]
