This vintage postcard features a colorful image of the National Museum in Gettysburg. Reverse has typed print that reads, “NATIONAL MUSEUM, GETTYSBURG, PENNA. THIS FREE NATIONAL MUSEUM CONTAINS THE LARGEST COLLECTION OF WAR RELICS ON THE BATTLEFIELD. IT IS CENTRALLY LOCATED NEAR THE NATIONAL CEMETERY GATE, WITHIN SIGHT OF THE SPOT WHERE LINCOLN DELIVERED HIS FAMOUS GETTYSBURG ADDRESS.” It was signed in July 1938 during the 75th anniversary of the battle and reunion of veterans, and reads, “J.B. HARNDEN, ALTOONA, UNION, THOMAS BARKER, 415 NEW BRIDGE RD. BELLMORE, NY, BALT C. LIGHT ARTILLERY”.

John B.Harnden enlisted on February 20, 1865 as a Private and was mustered into Co. “K”, 2nd Pennsylvania Cavalry. He was transferred out on June 17, 1865 at Washington, D.C. and transferred into Co. “K”, 1st Pennsylvania Pro Cavalry. He mustered out on July 13, 1865 at Cloud’s Mills, Virginia. Card was also signed by Thomas Barker, a member of Battery A, Maryland Light Artillery. This was an artillery battery that was organized in Baltimore and Pikesville in 1861 for a three year enlistment.

This is from private Gettysburg collection of Emily Rosensteel (Mrs. George D. Rosensteel). Emily married George Rosensteel, nephew to John H. Rosensteel, who lived through the three days of fighting in Gettysburg. John was also the founder of the well-known Rosensteel Collection; his nephew George, an avid relic collector himself, later built his own National Museum in Gettysburg. The Rosensteel relic collection was later passed down to their daughter, Angela, who in 1941 married Larry Eckert. Eckert worked in his father-in-law's museum and operated the famed Electric Map until the property was sold to the U.S. government in 1972.

Post card is in very good condition with no chips or tears. Card has yellowed with age.  [sm]
