RARE GETTYSBURG RELIC DESK SET BY JOHN GOOD

$1,895.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 910-02

The wooden base of this desk set meas. approx. 6.00 inches long x 3.75 inches wide x 1.00 inch high. The front of the base has “GETTYSBURG PA.” in faded yellow paint.

The top of the base is decorated with two distinct rows of Gettysburg relics. The first row consists of a dropped condition .58 Gardner bullet, a domed three piece South Carolina button, a square glass inkwell, a flattened US General Service Eagle button and a dropped condition .58 mini ball. The inkwell is typical of those used by John Good on his much sought after relic sets. It is made of clear glass, it is square in shape, has hand painted flowers on the front and a circular brass collar at top. Unfortunately the lid is missing.

The second row of relics contains a small iron shell fragment, the socket of a Model 1855 triangular bayonet, a round musket ball and a large canister ball that meas. approx. 1.25 inches across.

On the left side between the two rows of relics is a Confederate lead case shot.

The bottom of the base still retains 90% of the original paper label. As the original label began to wear away someone was wise enough to type out another label and attached it to the base. Both the old and the new label read as follows:

WOOD FROM CULP’S HILL

GRAPE SHOT FROM HANCOCK’S POSITION

BAYONET FROM SHERFYS

SHELL FROM ROUND TOP

UNION AND CONFEDERATE BULLETS & BUTTONS

This desk set is a fine example of the product made by John Good and is a rare item in excellent condition. [ad]
