Set of nineteen glass slides come in original box. Slides feature scenes of the Gettysburg battlefield including Little Round Top, Devil’s Den, various monuments, and two battle scenes. Label on top reads, “LANTERN SLIDES ILLUSTRATING THE SONG ENTITLED: ________ DEWITT C. WHEELER, INC. 120-122 W. 31ST ST. TEL. 5384 MADISON SQ. NEW YORK”. Box measures 3 5/8” x 4 3/8” x 2 1/8” high. Box has lightly distressed with age, but still intact.

The magic lantern was an early type of image projector employing painted pictures or photographs on sheets of glass, a lens, and a bright light source. It was mostly developed in the 17th century and commonly used for entertainment purposes. It was increasingly applied to educational purposes during the 1800’s and was in wide use until the mid-20th century, when a smaller-format version for photographs on film, marketed and commonly known as a slide projector, superseded it.  [sm]
