Photo is on a heavy gray piece of stock that meas. approx. 8.00 x 10.00 inches. The black and white paper image mounted at center meas. 4.75 x 6.25 inches and shows a gleaming white memorial to the 78th & 102nd New York Infantry. The monument depicts a Union infantrymen kneeling behind a rock wall aiming his musket. Prominently displayed below this is a 12th Corps star.
Image is clean and clear with good contrast. Mount surface has very light surface dirt.
Reverse has a late 19th or early 20th century ink inscription that reads “MONUMENT OF 78TH AND 102ND REGT. N.Y.V.I. 3RD BRIG. 2ND DIV. 12TH A.C. CULP’S HILL, GETTYSBURG PA. 1888.” Below this is a stamp that reads “… COLLECTION OF CAPT. GEORGE K. COLLINS.”
A quick search of unit rosters shows no Captain named Collins in either the 78th or 102nd but there is one George K. Collins listed who was a 1st Lieutenant in Company I, 149th New York which served in the same brigade.
Monument was dedicated in 1888. [ad]
