Maker’s mark which reads, “CRUVER MFG. CO. CHICAGO, U.S.A.”. In the 1900 Census Cruver’s occupation was recorded as running a photo and jewelry company. Examples of his earliest photographic novelties included an enclosed paperweight and a hand mirror and a 1907 advertisement gave a succinct outline of what his business had become. “Advertising novelties and souvenirs of celluloid, glass, paper and metal. Calendars and signs, buttons…and sundries” – most with photos incorporated in the final product. Importantly, a feature of the Cruver photographic novelties was that, for the most part, they were hand colored.
