This stereoview features John Burns (September 5, 1793 – February 4, 1872), who at the age of 69, was the only local civilian to take up arms at the battle of Gettysburg. He was wounded, but survived to become a national celebrity.

Image is mounted on yellow stock. Right edge is labeled with famous Gettysburg photographer William H. Tipton’s imprint. Left edge reads, “ARTISTIC STEREO GEMS OF GETTYSBURG SCENERY” Bottom of mount is dated 1887 and numbered “734- JOHN L. BURNS”. Image is very clear. Some light surface dirt is present. Reverse has a short biography of Burns. [SM]
