Very nice Gettysburg relic desk set with blue inkwell made by John Goode, who is known as an early maker of these desk sets.

The wood base meas. approx. 6 inches long x 3.50 inches wide x 1 inch high with a beveled front. There is no sign of a paper label. “GETTYSBURG JULY 1ST 2ND AND 3RD 63”, is painted on the front of the base.

The centerpiece of this set is a blue glass inkwell with hinged lid. Along the left side of the inkwell is a shell fragment, a fired C.S. bullet, a dropped two ring C.S. .58 caliber Gardner patent bullet, and a coat sized South Carolina button.

Along the right side of the plate is an iron case shot, a large canister ball, a coat sized eagle button and a three ring .54 caliber bullet.

Just behind the inkwell is a 2 inch section of a sword.

All the relics are in good shape and are firmly anchored to the base.

John Goode was a Gettysburg cabinetmaker who worked on wood projects for many of the local residents.  He was a prominent assembler of relic displays and owned a small shop on Race Horse Alley off Chambersburg Street.

These relic desk sets were some of the most sought after souvenirs of the battle.  [SM]
