Full eight page copy of the New York Times for July 2, 1863. Front page has two major headlines. The left column has “REBERL INVASION” in large black letters. Headline continues in a downward line “HIGHLY IMPORTANT FROM THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC,” “DEFEAT OF STUART’S CAVLARY,” “THE REBELS DRIVEN FROM WESTMINSTER TO HANOVER BY GEN. GREGG,” “THEIR DEFEAT AT HANOVER BY GEN. KILPATRICK,” “ANOTHER DEFEAT OF THE REBELS AT HANOVER JUNCTION,” “THEIR LOSS FOUR HUNDRED MEN AND SIX PIECES OF ARTILLERY,” “A SUPPOSED HEAVY BATTLE BETWEEN GENS. MEADE AND LEE,” “RAPID CANNONADING HEARD AT HARRISBURG LAST EVENING,” “PROBABLE POSITIONS OF THE MAIN REBEL ARMY.”
The central column is shorter and covers Gen. Rosecrans movements and the fight at Hoover’s Gap.
The article on Gettysburg refers to General Custer as “Caster.” Reporters would learn to spell his name correctly soon enough!
Paper has some light surface dirt and light edge wear. A very nice issue. [ad]
