This is a cast iron double rein bit very similar to the Richmond Arsenal Shay and Williams brass bit. It is covered with light to moderate surface rust. It was purchased at a local Gettysburg auction in May 2008; the main focus of the auction was the sale of the Larry Eckert Collection, a private Civil War collection assembled by both Rosensteel and Eckert families of Gettysburg.  [ff]
