Item Code: 945-21

Framed image meas. approx. 62.50 x 12.50 inches. This undated view was done by North H. Losey of Indianapolis, Indiana and is so marked in the lower right corner. Bottom center has caption that reads “GETTYSBURG BATTLE FIELD FROM CULP”S HILL OBSERVATORY / LOOKING WEST / No. 3.”

The town of Gettysburg dominates the right half of the background with East Confederate Ave coming out of the town at far right and heading toward the camera. Clearly visible are the fields crossed by the Confederates on the night of July 2nd in their attack on East Cemetery Hill which dominates the center of the photo. The monuments on the crest of East Cemetery Hill as well as the artillery emplacements there are clearly seen. Also visible through some trees is the building that housed the cyclorama on the site where the Gettysburg Bus Tour Station now stands. Visible at left is the large flag pole that once marked Meade’s Headquarters and the Pennsylvania Monument. Also visible across the skyline are the observation town that once stood in Zeigler’s Grove and the New York Monument in the Soldier’s National Cemetery.

Image dates from approximately 1913 and has excellent contrast and clarity. Wood frame is original with original glass. Left end of the glass is cracked. Image has some waviness and light surface dirt at one end.

A very interesting view of a part of the battlefield not as heavily photographed as others.  [ad]
