Large group shot of the attendees of the ceremonies welcoming home Adams County’s World War One veterans. The focal point of the image is a long line of US soldiers, sailors, marines, Red Cross and YMCA workers who are the guests of honor with the general public in the background and sides. Several cars are visible one of which has a US flag attached to the side. There is also a large US flag being held by the soldier standing at center of the group. With a magnifying glass some of the shoulder sleeve patches can be discerned. There are several black soldiers present one of which is wearing the 92nd Division patch of the buffalo. Other division insignia visible are the 2nd, 28th, 37th, 79th and 82nd.

In the background behind the group looms Power’s Hill. Just off the right side of the photograph is the Baltimore Pike. Image is clear with great contrast.

The image is marked in the bottom left corner “No.521 ADAMS COUNTY HEROES OF THE WORLD WAR AT WELCOME HOME CELEBRATION GETTYSBURG, PA. SEPT. 1, 1919. M. F. WILLIAMS PHOTO.”

Framed the photograph meas. approx. 45.25 x 10.50 inches. Photo is housed in a modern black frame with a gold border. All is in very good condition.

With the item is the front page of THE GETTYSBURG TIMES for September 1, 1919. Across the top is “ADAMS COUNTY WELCOMES HER HEROES.” Several headlines cover the front page. One lists men from Adams County killed during the war, another one reads “SEVENTY NINTH WELL EARNED RIGHT TO WEAR CHERISHED LORRAINE WAR CROSSES” and another reads “TOWN ASSUMES MILITARY AIR.” Under this last headline are the details of the Welcome Home event shown in the photograph. The articles discusses the program of events and that it was sponsored by the American Legion.

Newspaper has a jagged section missing along the right edge but is otherwise in good condition.  [ad]
