Item Code: 635-262

Large folded sheet (possibly a tip-out from a book) featuring the “High Water Mark” of the rebellion as well as a list of all the G.A.R. posts in Massachusetts. Created by the Grand Army Record Publishing Company.  The overall sheet measures 21 ¼” long x 16 ½” tall. The actual engraved illustration is 15” long x 10 ½” tall showing the fighting at the “angle” with an image of John F. Chase superimposed in the foreground.  There is a description of Pickett’s Charge under the engraving.  Down the left side is a complete list of all Massachusetts G.A.R. Posts in alphabetical order while the same Posts are listed in numerical order down the right side.  There are old folds and some staining from acidic paper.

Included with the engraving is a Magic Lantern slide of John F. Chase, 5th Maine Battery. Here is a perfect glass slide for viewing with a Magic Lantern projector of the 19th century. The glass slide measures 4” long by 3 ¼” high and is edged in thin tape. The central image is John F. Chase who was an artilleryman with the 5th Maine Battery on Steven’s Knoll when they were shelled by the Confederates. A round exploded near his gun, taking off his right arm, destroyed his left eye, and sent forty-eight pieces of shrapnel into his body. He was left at a field hospital for dead. Eventually he did recover. His image presented on the slide shows him in his wounded state with a stub of an arm and many holes in his chest. The slide has “C. T. MILLIGAN, Magic Lantern Manuf’r” and No. 728 Chestnut St., Philadelphia, Pa. printed on the left and right side of the slide. On the back is the remains of a paper label with a portion of the printed address again as well as an ink inscription “…Chase 5 Ma… / …wounds at Getty…”. This slide is in very good condition.  John F. Chase was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Chancellorsville just two months prior to the Battle of Gettysburg.

An interesting pair of items with John Chase and Gettysburg connection.   [jet]

Must be shipped in our small print box; too large to fit our newspaper sized box. Insured UPS ground $35.00 east of the Mississippi; $50 west of the Mississippi.
