This stool was once an item in the J.L. Schick general store, which was located in what is now named, the Stoever-Schick building. It is a historic three story brick structure located in downtown Gettysburg, on Lincoln Square, at the corner of Baltimore Street and Chambersburg Street. The business that currently occupies the building is House of Time. The historical marker beside it reads, “During the Battle of Gettysburg this federal style building, erected in 1817, housed Professor Martin Stoever’s family and J.L. Schick’s general store. As a result of the battle this building hosted a variety of unusual events. Shortly after the fighting began on July 1st, the Stoever’s quarters became an impromptu hospital for 20 wounded Union soldiers. Mrs. Stoever recalled the disruption in the house, “The Professor’s recitation room became the amputation room…” While the wounded were nursed upstairs three fugitive union soldiers were secretly sustained in the cellar by the Professor until the Confederates withdrew on July 3rd. Three days following the Confederate withdrawal, the Christian Commission took over Schick’s store for their supply and distribution center, while the Stoevers ran an “open commissary” in their back yard, feeding an endless number of hungry soldiers.”
Stool measures 21.25” tall. Seat measures 11.50” in diameter. Underside of seat has, “L. SCHICK”, wood burned and remnants of a paper label. Stool is sturdy with legs firmly attached. Shows scattered spotting, nicks and surface scratches.
A Victorian era postcard type advertisement from J.L. Schick’s store accompanies stool. One side shows a colorful floral design that reads, “COSMOPOLITAN EMPORIUM OF FASHIONS – MME. DEMORESTS RELIABLE PATTERNS – ORDERS PROMPTLY ATTENDED TO- SEND FOR CATALOGUE”. Reverse is an ad for J.L. Schick, listing the items available, including Mme. Demorest’s patterns.
J.L. Schick served as treasurer, from 1880- 1896, of the Gettysburg Memorial Association, the organization responsible for preserving the Gettysburg Battlefield. Schick also served as an officer on the Evergreen Cemetery Association.
This is a very unique Gettysburg collectible. [sl]
