Mounted in a hinged, blue cardboard, white linen-lined case, 5 x 2.125”, with presented inscription: “Presented by The United States on the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.” The bronze badge, 1.5 x 1.25”, upper inscription, “ATTENDANT/ 75th Anniversary/ Battle of Gettysburg/ Mary E. Canon”, decorated with Union and Confederate shields below. Badge reverse, number stamping “1999”. Two blue and gray ribbons attached, 3.5” x 1.5”, trimmed in red, white and blue. Cardboard case exhibits light wear & chipping at the corners. Badge and ribbons are pristine.
The 1938 Gettysburg Anniversary attendants were persons officially designated to accompany the returning veterans, some 2500 all told, all of them ninety plus years of age. “Mary Canon” was one of these designated attendants, though just which veterans she accompanied is unknown. Invites further research. An excellent collectible for 75th Gettysburg reunion aficionados. [jp]
