This Federal belt plate is of the regulation 1839 pattern and was recovered from the South Cavalry Battlefield at Gettysburg. Plate is in excavated condition. Constructed in the die-struck and rolled brass method, the brass accoutrement’s face shows a clear “US”. Face shows oxidation and has a brown patina. Much of the edge is missing. Lead filled back retains 85% of lead fill with lead loss along the outer edges. No maker’s mark. This is the style with “arrow” hooks; all three hooks remain. Recovered from the South Cavalry Field at Gettysburg. [jet]
