US PATTERN 1826 EAGLE BREAST PLATE DUG AT GETTYSBURG

$250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: R22797

This Federal eagle breast plate is of the regulation 1826 pattern and was recovered from the South Cavalry field at Gettysburg. Plate measures a diameter of 63 mm and is in good excavated condition. Constructed in the die-struck and rolled brass method, the brass accoutrement’s face has a spread-winged eagle looking to his left while holding three arrows in this right talon and an olive branch in his left.  Face is well preserved and exhibits just mild wear to the higher spots. One minor dent on the upper, left rim. Plate surface has acquired a brown patina. Lead filled back retains 99.9% of lead fill. No maker’s markings. Both iron hooks have rusted off.

This pleasing, original brass U.S. eagle breast plate from Gettysburg would be fine addition to any military belt plate display or Civil War collection.   [jet]
