From the collection of Lt. Samuel M. Sayford. Mounted on light mahogany board w/two .69 Caliber minie balls and a CW grapeshot. Plus a Gettysburg battle scene post-card and a contemporary Gettysburg commemorative medallion. Mounting board measures 2’ x 6.5, w/attached title: “GETTYSBURG BAYONET/ LT. SAMUEL SAYFORD COLLECTION. Accompanied by a Union Drummer Boy (of Gettysburg) Certificate of Authenticity.
Lt. Sayford was a local Adams County resident who recovered numerous artifacts from the Gettysburg battlefield, including this Enfield bayonet which has been sheared off by some sort of projectile at the base of its socket. Other than that, the bayonet is in fine relic condition, exhibiting a moderately rusted plumb colored patina. The accompanying grapeshot displays rust, while the two .69 caliber minie ball (for re-rifled US M1842 muskets) are in excellent shape.
Samuel M. Sayford’s Union army experience summarizes as follows: On 9/11/1862 he mustered as a private into Co. “K”, PA 1st Militia, and was mustered out two weeks later, 9/25/1862. Then on 7/18/1864 he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant and mustered into Co. “E”, 194th Infy, from which he was mustered out 11/6/1864.
Solid Gettysburg relic bayonet. Accompanied by documentation. [JP]
