Print shows the Hero of Gettysburg, John Burns, in action on July 1, 1863. Burns is shown front and center firing his old flintlock with his ramrod stuck in the ground beside him. He wears a dark swallow-tailed coat and light colored trousers that are ripped in the left leg to expose a bandage covering his wound. On the ground in front of him is his light colored top hat. Next to Burns several members of the 150th Pennsylvania are shown in various poses on the firing line. Some are loading, some are firing, one man is hit and falling while an officer stands stoically in the background observing Burns at his work.
The print is by Gilbert Gaul who was a well-known and prolific artist of Civil War and American West subjects. Many of his illustrations were used by The Century Company in their “BATTLES & LEADERS OF THE CIVIL WAR” series as well as numerous other publications.
Print is housed in a period wood frame that meas. approx. 18.00 inches long x 14.25 inches wide and is approx. 1.25 inches in depth. The frame has a gold interior border. Print is double matted and meas. approx. 10.50 x 7.75 inches.
Frame shows light wear consistent with age. Print is sepia toned and is in good condition. [AD]
