Tipton view of well over 100 people posed in front of the equestrian statue of Major General Winfield Scott Hancock on East Cemetery Hill at Gettysburg. The large group is made up of men, women and children of all ages. All the men and some of the women wear badges that have dark ribbons with a light five-pointed star above a printed celluloid drop. The decoration on the drop cannot be made out. No doubt some of the older men in the group are veterans and at front left is a fellow in a sun helmet that looks to be a battlefield guide. In the left background is the monument to Batteries F & G of the 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery.

Image is clear with excellent contrast. Lower right corner is marked “NO. 1768. ROYAL BLUE LINE EXCURSION OF CONN. ON EAST CEMETERY HILL. GETTYSBURG JULY 14TH ’96. TIPTON PHOTO. GETTYSBURG, PA.” The Royal Blue Line was the name the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad’s premier passenger line between New York and Washington, D.C. beginning in 1890.

Over all the framed item meas. approx. 22.25 x 16.75 inches. The mat has discolored some with age but the frame and mat look to be the original. Does contain plexiglass and modern hangwire on the back. [ad]
