Item is the nose section only of a Hotchkiss shell. The fuse plug has been pushed inside the shell. The sabot and base cup are gone. The body of the shell shows light surface pitting and is otherwise very nice.
With the nose section is a round wood base for it to sit on and an old typed label that reads “NO.95 – HOTCHKISS SHELL FROM GETTYSBURG FROM THE HENRY METCALF COLLECTION RECENTLY SOLD OUT. OLD TAG STATES ‘FOUND ON BATTLEFIELD OF GETTYSBURG IN 1869 BY GEORGE SIMPSON. BASE CAP AND LEAD BAND ARE MISSING.”
Label is wrapped in old cellophane that is now worn but the label remains intact. [ad]
