Item Code: 33-504

This item is a grouping of six items recovered in Hunterstown, PA, a small borough in Adams County near Gettysburg. The dominating item is the bottom section of a U.S. cartridge box. It measures 4 ½ inches long by 1 ¼ inches wide and consists of non-pliable leather with two lightly rusted roller buckles and one large finial with rivet, all firmly attached. There is also one small knapsack hook; this is made of brass and is lightly pitted but undamaged condition. There are four buttons included in this grouping. The first is a plain, unmarked large round one-piece jacket button that is slightly convex and with the reverse loop shank still intact. It is most likely made of brass and has some reverse dirt residue. One button is an unmarked U.S. Infantry two-piece button with the spread eagle and shield with the raised letter “I”. The reverse loop shank is intact and unbent. There is one small edge ding and the front has a small indentation. All features still remain. The remaining two buttons are General Service two-piece buttons with the spread eagle with shield without the letter “I”. One is lightly corroded and has the reverse loop shank bent over but still firmly attached. It is incompletely marked as “BBURY BUTTON “. The second and remaining button has the lower right front lightly pushed in and cracked and has some dirt residue. The reverse has an intact but bent loop shank. It is marked “*** EXTRA *** QUALITY”. This grouping is attractively displayed on a small round china dish measuring 3 inches in diameter and marked on the bottom with “IRONSTONE CHINA / BISHOP & STONIER / ENGLAND”. This lot is identified in John Geiselman’s collection by his museum listing. Originally sold as item# R11624.  [bb]

The Horse Soldier is pleased to offer a number of items from the John P. Geiselman collection, a collection that was on display for many years at the Geiselman Country Store Museum on Barlow - Two Taverns Road. Geiselman began his collecting as a child in the early 1920s, and during the pre-World II period had access to artifacts that had been purchased earlier at the estate sales of the Trostle, Rogers, Rose, Weikert, and Wentz farms - local properties that figured prominently in the battle and its aftermath. During this period he had access as well to the Hill , Plank, and Stewart collections, and was able to acquire other items that had been sold from turn-of-the-century relics establishments such as the Danner, Ziegler, and Oak Ridge Museums. Furthermore, Geiselman carefully documented most artifacts, and collectors perusing the list will be able to note, in many instances, not only the source of the relic and the date of its recovery, but also the part of the battlefield from which it came. In other words, his collection is the last major grouping of Gettysburg artifacts assembled and documented by a local resident.
