GETTYSBURG FOUND CONFEDERATE FORKED-TONGUE FRAME BUCKLE

$975.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1030-270

Like the frame buckles cast with tongues integral to the frame, the forked tongue buckle was a widely used general service belt buckle by Confederate soldiers. This is the larger variety and has the standard configuration of the central bar cast somewhat raised from the frame and a tongue with a single shank that forks into two curved prongs about half way to the far edge of the frame, sometimes leading to its alternative collector designation as a “wishbone” frame. This one shows an inward bend at either side of the frame and distortion to the two tongues indicating a strong impact of some sort and likely represents a buckle from a casualty rather than a simple discard. This has been mounted is attractive gilt framed shadow box with gold on black etched display panel indicating it was recovered here at Gettysburg some time after the battle, but long before the establishment of a national park. No specific location was recorded, but the buckle is a good example of the relics of the battle retrieved by visitors for decades after the engagement and it is a seldom offered opportunity at a Confederate relic from the battle.  [sr]
