Here is a wonderful painted specimen of a Civil War Model 1858 corrugated-pattern (a.k.a. Bullseye) tin canteen in very good relic condition. Found on the Gettysburg battlefield sometime after the war and painted in patriotic colors, this very canteen was among the early battlefield collectibles sold by The Horse Soldier over thirty years ago from the Rosensteel Collection. Canteen consists of two circular sections of pressed-tin, formed in an oblate spheroid pattern and soldered together at the rim. Artifact, which exhibits seven concentric reinforcing rings extruded on each side, is missing its coarse brown wool cloth cover, linen shoulder sling, cork stopper and pull-ring.

The corrugated or bullseye-pattern with its series of concentric rings began as an effort to increase the durability of canteen equipment. Fluid capacity of the canteen was three pints and its liquid contents were kept cool by means of the wet wool cover. Issued to Union troops, this original Philadelphia Depot-style canteen is one of over 1,500,000 such canteens produced at the depot between July 1862 and the war’s end.

Accoutrement displays red, white and blue colors painted alternately on the canteen’s raised reinforcing rings giving it a patriotic appearance. The bright colors remaining on one side of this spheroid container still adhere tightly to the metal with minimal flaking and crazing while the paint on the opposite side rings have succumbed to major flaking, scuffing, chipping and rusting. The pewter spout bears no maker’s stamping and both the spout and collar, together with all three, iron strap loops are painted a dark golden color, ever popular with the G.A.R. Both sides of the canteen exhibit mild depressions and the area adjacent to the bottom strap loop shows small rust holes and perforations in the metal. This ‘corrugated’ pattern tin canteen from the Gettysburg battlefield is a great relic example of what the Civil War soldier carried on his person and later brought home.

For the collector seeking an original, Gettysburg-related Civil War canteen at a reasonable price, this canteen accoutrement certainly fits the requirement. Originally sold as item# M19883.  [ra]
