Block of wood meas. approx. 4.00 inches long x 3.50 wide by 2.00 inches high at its highest point. Poking out of dead center of the top is a lead Civil War projectile. Not enough of it is visible to tell what kind of a projectile it is.
Written in pencil on one end of the block is “HOMAN TREE 1908” and across the front in black ink is “GETTYSBURG.” Block also has a modern tag that reads “G-041.”
This wood block is from a tree that stood in the yard of the Homan house which is located at the intersection of Baltimore and Lefever streets across from the well-known Farnsworth House restaurant. The building now houses “MR. G’s” ice-cream and still exhibits some bullet holes from the battle. [ad]
