Taken looking south from the Wheatfield Road, this photograph by the Tyson brothers dates to August, 1863, little more than a month after the battle. Names of many prominent topographical features were yet to be generally established. The Tysons here used the term, “Granite Hill, near Round Top,” the latter referring to what we now refer to as Big Round Top, as distinguished from Granite Hill, now “Little Round Top.” The view shows the rocky western slope of the hill, which had been cleared of its trees some years before the battle. By 1863 bushes and scattered secondary growth did little to block a clear field of fire for the Union defenders and the Tysons have subtitled the photograph, “The stronghold occupied by the extreme left of the Union army.” This does not convey much of the back and forth struggle for the area and even the hill, which was occupied only at the last moment by Union troops as Longstreet’s two divisions crashed into the Union left wing on July 2.

The tones and clarity of the image are superb. There is just a small bit of foxing in the sky at top center. The photograph has been professionally matted and would look great framed. Photograph measures 8 ½” x 5 ½”, matte measures 14” x 11”. A printer’s note in pencil on the reverse notes the dimensions of the image for possible reproduction in a book. The albumen image is mounted on its original mount with gilt border and printed captions and photographer’s credit.    [sr]
