The fighting on the Union right wing at Gettysburg on the evening of July 2 was protracted, close-up and largely conducted by musketry alone. With other 12th Corps units pulled out to reinforce the line elsewhere, Greene’s brigade was stretched out to hold the entrenchments on Culp’s Hill and found itself attacked by three Confederate brigades coordinating with the assault on Cemetery Hill. The result left the landscape filled with bullet-scarred trees that stirred the imagination of later visitors who likely appreciated the contrast between the evidence of man’s violence and the bucolic peacefulness of the woods. In fact, during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the fighting in this section of the field attracted much more attention than the events on Little Round Top or even Pickett’s Charge. Titled “Culp’s Woods,” this view by the Tyson brothers shows the area, “Occupied by the right wing of the Union Army, and the scene of the terrific musketry contest on the 2d and 3d.” The view seems to be taken looking east from Evergreen Cemetery. The large albumen image is on a period mount with gilt border and printed captions. The tonal quality and clarity are excellent. The photograph measures approx. 8 ½” x 5 ½”; the mount measures approx. 14 ½” x 10 ¾”. The Tyson brothers are perhaps the best known of the local photographers who photographed the battlefield and supplied views to many visitors, including veterans of the battle.  [sr]
