GETTYSBURG REUNION CELLULOID CORPS BADGE PIN OF THE 13th VERMONT

Item Code: 286-548

This scarce pinback celluloid badge comes from veterans of a regiment that played a significant part at Gettysburg. The badge imitates a Third Division, First Corps badge in its round shape and blue color. Printed in white lettering in the center is, “13th Vt. / GETTYSBURG / July, 1st. 2nd, 3rd / 1863.” Around the perimeter, also in white, reads: “1st Corps, 3rd division” on the upper half, and “Army of the Potomac” on the lower half. The badge has a few stains on the face and back, but the pin is in place and the text is legible.

The 13th Vermont enrolled for nine-months service, from 10/10/62 to 7/21/63. Brigaded with some other Vermont regiments and assigned to the Army of the Potomac, they probably had decided army life was not too bad, escaping Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville and being only peripherally involved in repulsing Stuart’s raid, until Gettysburg that is. Arriving on the field on July 1, the regiment took part in the withdrawal to Cemetery Hill, where it endured artillery fire the next day until called up to help drive back Confederates crossing the Emmitsburg Road, which it did, helping to recover a federal artillery battery. July 3, however, brought its moment of truth. At the climax of Pickett’s Charge, Stannard ordered the Vermonters to advance, maneuver under fire, and deliver a flanking fire into Pickett’s men, their Colonel, unable to make his orders heard amid the gunfire, seizing the colors to the lead the men into position, where they fired into the Confederates at close range, eventually taking the surrender of 243 of the enemy as the assault collapsed, while losing 11 killed, 81 wounded and 23 missing of their own.

The regiment took part in the pursuit of Lee before being ordered home for muster out. They must have decided that they had not missed much in their service.   [sr]
