Image is mounted on thin paper stock and looks to have been meant for a stereo card but instead the image was issued as an individual shot.
A close look at the famous gatehouse reveals several windows have been broken by bullets, shrapnel or flying debris. There is also a good bit of chipping to the brick work near the top of the buildings arch. At right is a man wearing a light duster and hat. Also, standing just inside the arch of the gateway, is a person in white shirt who moved during the exposure of the negative causing a white blur. To the left of the gateway is a broken-down fence. In the road in front of the gatehouse is a horse and wagon with several men in it.
View was taken looking slightly southwest form the field across the Baltimore Pike from the gatehouse. Visible in the foreground are two artillery lunettes which face north.
Image clarity is excellent as is the contrast. Mount is clean.
Reverse has modern pencil inscription that reads “GETTYSBURG CEMETERY JULY ’63.”
With the image is a Xerox copy of the story of the gatehouse titled “GATEWAY OF CEMETERY, GETTYSBURG.” [ad]
