Preprinted document filled out in period ink. Document meas. approx. 8.00 x 10.00 inches and is in fair condition. The document has two horizontal fold lines. The top fold line is getting weak and the bottom fold has caused the document to be in two separate pieces.
The document was filled out in Philadelphia on October 22, 1864 and discharges Private William Makee of Company D, 60th New York Infantry for disability due to “a gunshot wound in the left foot, received in battle.” The document also states at bottom that Private Makee has been on duty at the hospital until discharge.
William Makee resided in Ogdensburg, New York when he enlisted as a private in Company D, 60th New York Infantry on September 12, 1861. At the time the 25 year old was listed as being 6’ tall with a light complexion, gray eyes, black hair and by occupation a farmer.
The 60th New York fought at Antietam, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. In the last named action Makee is listed as missing in action on July 1, 1863. Evidently he was wounded and later turned up or was wounded, captured and paroled. Either way he ended up in the hospital at Philadelphia where he received this document. [ad]
