Signed by Pennsylvania Governor John W. Geary and State Auditor General J.F. Hartranft, dated “First Day of January 1872”. Pre-printed proclamation, 14.25 x 8.75.” Beige w/ornamented olive trim.
This document is a “certificate of Adjudicated claim for War Damages…sustained by the Citizens of Pennsylvania during the late rebellion..,” which certifies that “William Miller” and been approved for a payment of “Two Hundred and Thirty One and 40/100 Dollars .”; a claim submitted by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to the United States.
General Hartranft was a prominent officer who served as the Provost Marshall of Washington who read the execution order to the Lincoln conspirators hung July 7, 1865. Governor Geary was a politician who in his pre-war phase had been Mayor of San Francisco, Territorial Governor of Kansas, and then a divisional commander in Slocum’s Corps at Gettysburg, before being elected Pennsylvania Governor in 1867. Hartranft would follow Geary in the PA Governors chair.
