On June 30, 1863 during its approach march to Gettysburg, the Union 2nd Corps camped at Taneytown, Maryland. Over the years this camp has yielded many relics including the button offered here.
Three-piece button in good condition. The face is very clean for a dug button. There is a small push at center and even though the raised areas have darkened there is still some gilt in the lower areas. There are no cracks. Eagle and state shield are clearly visible as is the word “EXCELSIOR.”
Reverse has a good shank and is dark with a raised mark in a depressed channel that reads “SUPERIOR QUALITY.” [ad]
